Bio-Chemical Weapons - Bush's Record on securing International Controls

When W. Bush first came to power, the world was on the brink of securing a real multi-national system of control over weapons of mass destruction. A code had been drawn up for this and a treaty was about to be agreed. It was actively backed by, and agreed to, the UK, Russia, Germany, France, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Liberia, Cuba and many more nations. Under it an international inspectorate was to be set up. All nations who signed up, would be bound not to produce any such weapons - including the Western and the Arabian powers. An international inspectorate was to be set up to process any report that a member state was secretly or openly breaking this treaty. BUT - the Bush administration immediately torpedoed this nearly signed treaty on coming to power. The justification given was that this treaty would open US facilities for inspection by the UN - and this would put at risk US national security!!! Thus did Bush sabotage the only hope the world had to secure protection from such dreadful weapons. Since then, no other measure has been put in place.

Introduction to Armsgate - did Bush Sr and Reagan betray US hostages in Iran in order to discredit President Carter?

In the early 1990s I learnt while working as a freelance producer hired by the BBC's flagship program 'Panorama' of a most extraordinary book that had just been published in America called 'The October Surprise' written by one of President Ronald Reagan's staff. It happened during the election campaign that put President Carter against a team of Reagan and Bush. it alleged that Reagan's election team had done most extraordinary deal with the Iranians who were then holding hostage the staff of the US Embassy in Tehrain. The deal was that if the Iranians refused to release the hostages to President Carter, thus making Carter look weak and ineffective, then the Republicans would arm Iran when they came to power. Iran was then desperate for arms supplies. The Ayatollahs had inherited from the Shah an army that had been equipped by the Americans - but now they could not get any spare parts. Their war planes were sitting on airstrips with flat tires, helpless - and Saddam Hussein was attacking them.

So - the Iranians held the Americans hostage even longer than they may have intended - and did not release them to the very day when Reagan was inaugurated as President and George Bush Senior as Vice President. Immediately after this all the old stocks of NATO weapons made their way to Iran on vast secret convoys, facilitated by the Israelis who were more worried by Iraq than they were of Iran, since Iraq was much nearer to Israel.

I asked a Panorma BBC researcher in New York to buy me a copy of this book - and much to my surprise, she phoned me back to say she had bought for me what seeemed to be the last copy in New York. It was not that the book was well advertised - it simply was that the stocks were vanishing. I then flew with the book to Washington DC to find that the press corps there also could not get the book. It had vanished from the shelves - and the copy in the Congressional Library seemed to be permanently 'in binding' and not availble. The publisher was liquidated. The author found under her contractthat she could not republish - or so I was told. Soon another author put out a book with exactly the same title - and no one seemed to remember that this was not the same book.I sat down and read the book carefully. The author named her sources - so I chased them up. I found them. I interviewed former CIA agents that had been based in Iran. They told me that the book was true - that they had helped with the arms shipments. I tracked down former MOSSAD agents, Issraeli secrset agents, who told me the same. I took the story to WGBH Boston, the makers of a top US investigative program called Frontline - they too were sceptial at first - but when they read what I had discovered they changed their minds. - the rest of the story is under Armsgate below
